NEET UG practice starts from the NMC syllabus
A quiz titled “NEET biology” can ask you who conducts the exam. That question will never appear on the OMR sheet. The paper asks for the option that follows from a Class 11 or Class 12 line in Physics, Chemistry, or Biology.
Two official documents matter more than any strategy reel. The NTA information bulletin for NEET (UG) 2026 (published February 2026) sets the paper. The National Medical Commission’s updated syllabus, flagged in NTA’s notice of 8 January 2026, sets what can be asked.
The 2026 paper is 180 questions, all compulsory
NTA’s bulletin says the test is Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany and Zoology). You attempt 180 multiple-choice questions in 180 minutes, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Physics is 45 questions and 180 marks. Chemistry is the same. Biology is 90 questions and 360 marks. The total is 720.
Each item has four options and one correct or most appropriate answer. Correct is +4. Incorrect is -1. Unanswered is 0. If a question is later dropped, the bulletin says every candidate who appeared gets +4 on it, attempted or not. You do not need to memorise that clause. You do need to know that a blank and a wrong tick are different marks on the day.
Biology is half the paper
Ninety of the 180 questions are Biology. A week that is only Physics numericals can feel productive and still leave half the marks untouched. Split practice time so Biology is not the leftover hour after you are tired.
Open the NMC unit list and pick one unit, not “Biology”. Human physiology, or the living world, or organic chemistry’s basic principles. Read the NCERT pages for that unit, then ten questions that could only be answered from those pages. If the question could be answered by someone who has never opened the chapter, it is the wrong kind of practice.
Negative marking changes the guess
Four correct answers are 16 marks. Four wrong guesses are -4, which deletes one correct answer you already earned. If two options are clearly wrong and you are choosing between the other two, the guess is a calculated one. If all four still look possible, leave it. The bulletin gives 0 for unanswered and -1 for a wrong option, including a question where you mark more than one response.
Full-length mocks are useful once a chapter set is solid. Early on they hide the gap. A 40% in a three-hour paper does not tell you whether electrostatics or plant physiology failed. A ten-question set on one unit does.
What to ignore while the syllabus is still unfinished
Cutoff predictions, college predictors, and “expected paper” threads change every week. The January 2026 notice tells candidates to use the NMC syllabus for study material. When a coaching PDF and that syllabus disagree, follow the NMC list and check nta.ac.in for a later bulletin. Patterns get revised. A blog post should not be your only copy of the rules.
